limited financial aid for international students

The University of Texas at San Antonio reserves the right to change fees or tuition without notice.

The University of Texas at San Antonio has limited scholarship opportunities for international students. Unless you have been admitted to the University in good standing, there are no financial aid programs available in which you can apply for beforehand.

The Good Neighbor Scholarship Program provides a tuition exemption to students who were born in and are current residents of an independent nation in the American Hemisphere other than Cuba or the United States. Candidates must be on a United States Immigration Service approved and current student visa (F-1 or J-1). The candidate must intend to return to their country upon completion of his/her program of study, be admitted unconditionally at an eligible public institution, and maintain satisfactory academic progress.

Honors College Scholarships are available to first year university students. To be eligible to apply for membership in the Honors College and Honors College Scholarships students must first apply to and be accepted for admission to UTSA no later than February 1 prior to the Fall Semester (August) that they will enter university.

A separate application and writing sample is needed for acceptance into the Honors College and for Honors scholarships. To be eligible for an Honors scholarship, students must submit their Honors College application by February 1 of the year of their enrollment at UTSA. Scholarships are awarded in March for the following Fall Semester (August).

To be considered for this highly prestigious scholarship, applicants must graduate in the top 20% of their class and earn a SAT score of 1150 or above. If your high school does not give rank-in-class, you may substitute a recommendation letter from your principal. Each year, 20 students receive $1,500 per year. An additional 10 to 20 students will receive awards worth $250 to $2,500. International students who earn a scholarship of $1,000 or more per year will have their tuition reduced to the in-state rate, which will save them approximately $4,600 or more per semester. Students who maintain excellent grades can renew their scholarship for an additional three years.

For more information about the Honors College, see the web page at www.utsa.edu/honors.

The Border Counties Program for Students from Mexico allows an unlimited number of students from Mexico who have financial need to enroll at the University of Texas at San Antonio while paying the resident tuition rate. To be eligible:

  • Student must be a citizen or permanent resident of Mexico

  • Student must be on United States Immigration Service approved and current student visa (F-1 or J-1) when enrolling at the university

  • Student must meet the admissions requirements at UTSA

  • Student must enroll on a full-time basis (undergraduate, 12 credit hours per semester; graduate, 9 credit hours per semester)

  • Student must submit necessary documents as proof of financial need

  • Student should apply for the Border Counties Program at approximately the same time they apply for admission to the university

Eligible candidates must complete an application and provide information regarding family income, assets, and basic living expenses. This formal documentation of income and expenses translated into English must be submitted with the application in order to be considered. If student meets above criteria, the waiver is good only for the term approved and students must resubmit application for continued eligibility.

Note: students who are selected for the Good Neighbor Program cannot apply for the Border Counties Program for Students from Mexico and vice versa. Most departments offer Competitive Scholarships in which out-of-state and foreign students can compete. If students are awarded a competitive scholarship for $1,000 or more they qualify for in-state tuition rather than pay the international rate. In order to be eligible for this kind of scholarship, you must be currently enrolled at UTSA and have an established UTSA grade point average.

International students are encouraged to conduct independent scholarship searches via Internet and other sources within their country in seeking financial assistance.
