Demography and Organization Studies Update
The department of Demography and Organization Studies is in it's second year of operation and second year of the colleges first Ph. D. program. We can now begin to think of graduating our first class in two-three years. As chair of the Department of Demograhy and Organization Studies, I am proud to provide the following imformation:
Dr. Karl Eschbach had a spectacular research year with ten publications (two in the Archives of Internal Medicine – IF 7.29) and received a $40,000 contract from UTMB to continue his research with them. He has secured the funding of IDSER for the next biennium, in the amount of $660,000, which includes funding from the Methodist Health Care System, TXDOT, the Texas Legislative Council and the Governor’s Office. Karl was also confirmed as the Texas State Demographer.
- Dr. Johnelle Sparks had two refereed publications in Rural Sociology and Sociology of Spatial Inequality and received a $2,000 College Research Grant has applied for three other research grants and a $10,000 contract from Mathematica. Within the Rural Sociological Society, she is on the publications, program and nominating committees and co-chair of Population Research interest group.
Dr. Corey Sparks has received a $5,000 University Faculty Research Grant, $1,500 Educational Research Fellowship from UTSA’s Mexico Center, and a $2,000 College Research Grant. He is also a Co-Principal Investigator on “Spatiotemporal Dimensions of Population Change in the Northern Islands of Orkney, Scotland c. AD 1730-2000”, in the amount of $560,000.
- Dr. Don Warren has a summer supplemental grant through the Small Business Administration with Al Salgado. He also had two contracts in 2007 in which he forecasted different levels of capacity for the state’s criminal justice system. The project was funded by the Governor’s office. Don Warren has a book chapter forthcoming in a Springer volume. He coauthored a report on performance of intervention methods on college admission and continuation for P-16 programs. The report and study were funded from private and state sources. Don Warren has also overseen the acquisition and use of the departmental server. This provides Windows-based storage (i.e., a separate drive) for all departmental users.
Dr. Nazrul Hoque continues to perform all the estimates and projections used by state offices. He works in the Institute of Demographic and Socioeconomic Research (IDSER) and teaches in the College of Public Policy. He has a book chapter forthcoming in a Springer volume related to methods used in population estimates and projections.
- Dr. Mary Zey is the Graduate Advisor of Record in the Department of Demography and Organization Studies. She has had a very busy spring completing all the graduate student files. She had three publications in “The International Encyclopedia of Organizational Studies” edited by Clegg and Riley. She has a book chapter forthcoming in a Springer volume on the development of new programs in Applied Demography. She is in the process of completing her book on “Corprorate Control and Governance at the Turn of the 21st Century: Enron, Andersen and their Bankers,” Cambridge University Press.
- Ms. Emma Mancha received an $88,000 supplemental grant from NIH on incidence rates of breast cancer among Mexican-American women in Border Regions.
- Ms. Mary Bollinger received the Outstanding Graduate Student in COPP Award and has been awarded a dissertation fellowship from the Office of Veterans Affairs.
- Mr. John Garza was the recipient of the $5,000 Beldon Scholarship will intern with the City of San Antonio this summer.
Dr. Lloyd Potter has been offered the position of Director of IDSER. Potter has current funding in the amount of $6,000,000.
- Fifteen students will have completed at least 27 hours by the end of the summer semester.
- Nine students have been admitted to the program for next year but it appears only seven will actually enroll.
