Department of Criminal Justice Update

Dr. Mitch MillerAgain, there are several updates to share regarding current activities and recent accomplishments within the Criminal Justice Department. Toward the goal of providing the best possible service to our students, we are now posting a three-year schedule of anticipated course offerings for both the undergraduate and graduate programs on the Department’s webpage. All current and incoming students are encouraged to consider this schedule for course planning in future semesters.

Faculty have been heavily involved in a range of discipline activities. Dr. Mike Gilbert is becoming quite a visible figure in the area of restorative justice. In addition to being elected as the first Chair of the Restorative Justice Division of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, he is the Program Director for the National Conference on Restorative Justice which will be held at the UTSA Downtown Campus this May (full announcement with registration details can be found on the Department’s webpage). Similarly, Dr. Leanne Alarid will be serving as the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) Chair for the 2011 national meeting in Toronto, Canada. Also, Dr. Roger Enriquez is the new Editor of the Southwest Journal of Criminal Justice, which will be housed in the Department through 2012.

Many of the faculty and criminal justice graduate students recently returned from the 2009 ACJS Conference in Boston. I am very proud to announce that two of our graduate students were recognized with awards. Carlos Montemayor receive the Esther Madriz Student Travel Award for the most outstanding paper from the Minorities and Women’s section and Alison Routh was named the Alpha Phi Sigma, National Criminal Justice Honors Society, 2008 National Outstanding Member of the Year.  Join me in congratulating them on receiving these impressive awards. Please contact the Department if we may be of assistance as the Spring semester continues.
