Nonprofit Management Program

Both the Nonprofit Management and American Humanics Programs are seeing dramatic changes.  Recruitment efforts of staff and students have helped in a significant increase in American Humanics certification candidates.  These efforts have resulted in a 100% increase in the number of graduate and undergraduate students seeking American Humanics national certification in Nonprofit Management and Leadership, as well as a 25% increase in those seeking a Minor in Nonprofit Management.

American Humanics (AH) Update:
Six UTSA students completed the requirements for AH during the past semester. These individuals will be honored at the American Humanics Student Association (AHSA) Annual Recognition Reception in May. Program affiliates who offer internships and volunteer opportunities for AH students will also be recognized at this event.  It is noteworthy that the number of community-based organizations that provide internship and volunteer opportunities to AH students tripled in the past three months.  This event also provides an opportunity for AHSA to raise money to help defray the cost of students’ required attendance at the annual AH Management/Leadership Institute (AHMI) – a national conference for AH students and national nonprofit partners.  Students participate in national dialogues, receive recognition for their contributions to the nonprofit sector, attend workshops and presentations, and apply for and interview with national nonprofit organizations.  The 2010 AHMI will take place in Phoenix, Arizona in January.

This is a picture of some of the 11 students who attended the 2009 AHMI in Indianapolis, Indiana.  They are (from left to right): Luis Tienda, Zulema Reyna, Cristina Forbes, Llyas Salahud-Din, and Crystal Del Bosque.  Each student pictured also received the NextGen Scholarship – a competitive scholarship through the national AH office.  This $4,500 award is given to help students with the costs of completing their required 300-hour internships.  UTSA has seen 7 of its students receive this award, and is currently in the next round of awards with 4 up for consideration.  This scholarship is only available to UTSA students actively seeking their AH certification.

Nonprofit Management Program Update:
This is a picture of some of the 42 participants who received a certificate of completion in nonprofit management and leadership on April 3, 2009.  For the first time, participants were offered a chance to also apply for the AH national certification. UTSA is the only AH-affiliated campus in the country to offer this option.  Currently 10 participants are completing the certification process.

The Nonprofit Management Program (NMP) offers nonprofit professionals, volunteers, and board members an opportunity to be further educated in leadership skills and the fundamentals of nonprofit management.  The next NMP begins with the Summer Institute for Leadership and Stewardship (SILS) on August 6 and 7, 2009.

Additional information about SILS and NMP can be found at www.utsa.edu/nmp.
