The Molecular Microbiology and Immunology (MMI) group at UTSA consists of scientists in the disciplines of bacteriology, mycology, animal and plant virology, immunology, biochemistry, genomics and proteomics. The research of the MMI group is heavily focused on areas related to homeland defense and the better understanding of the bases of microbial and autoimmune diseases, host responses to disease, and the cure and prevention of disease.

Specific studies of the MMI group
are targeted on:
  1. the molecular basis of microbial pathogenesis in selected air-borne, food and water-borne, mosquito-borne, and sexually-transmitted diseases, including the study of biological threat agents.
  2. humoral, cellular, and nonspecific host responses.
  3. microbial toxins.
  4. detection of microbial agents and toxins, including threat agents.
  5. development of new and better vaccines and vaccine delivery technologies.
  6. development of new and better chemotherapies.
  7. studies of interest to the U.S. military.

State of the art laboratories and other facilities of the MMI group are located in the Science Building, Biosciences Building, West Campus Laboratories, and the new BSE Building on the UTSA campus and at the UTSA CEBBER (Center of Excellence in Biotechnology and Bioprocessing Education and Research) at the Brooks City Base in San Antonio. The MMI faculty collaborate actively with faculty at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research in San Antonio, and U.S. military scientists.

Opportunities for research and education in molecular microbiology and immunology are available at the undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral levels.
