  Fall Convocation  

The Fall Convocation celebrates the arrival of the new academic year and is an opportunity to welcome new and returning students.  It is an exciting time and faculty is encouraged to wear academic regalia or UTSA colors and march in the procession.   The 2008 Fall Convocation will be held on Monday, August 25, from 10-11:30 AM in the Campus Recreation Center.  The keynote speaker will be Dr. Ricardo Romo.  Faculty and Staff wishing to attend may join us for breakfast in the Campus Recreation Center upstairs studios beginning at 8:30 AM.  Following the breakfast, the Convocational Processional will form on the 2nd floor at 9:30 AM and proceed to the gym for the ceremony.  After the Convocation, students will go to their colleges for orientation and lunch.

 
     
  New Associate Dean of Research  
Dr. Andrew Tsin begins his appointment as Associate Dean for Research August 15, 2008.  This appointment is in addition to his role of professor of biology, professor of ophthalmology at the UTHSC, and Director of the Center for Research and Training in the Sciences.  In addition to his leadership roles in the UTSA community, Tsin conducts research on how eyes detect light. more...
 
     
  Science Academy Champions  
On a hot summer day in the heart of Texas, most people think about nothing but swimming in a cool pool and drinking a glass of lemonade, but science was all that was on the minds of nineteen high school students from across the state.  The students, all first and second place winners of the 2008 ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair, gathered to participate in the first annual Governor’s Science and Technology Champions Academy.  Sponsored by the Governor’s office and the Texas Workforce Commission, the week-long residential summer camp was coordinated by the College of Sciences. more...
 
 
 
  Chemistry's Garcia Visits Peru  
UTSA Assistant Professor in chemistry, Dr. Carlos Garcia traveled to Peru this May to attend the ten day Pan American Advanced Studies Institute (PASI) entitled Interdisciplinary Studies in the Chemical Biology of the Tropics.  Funded by the US Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, each PASI assembles scientists in all disciplines from across the Americas to lecture and foster future collaborations. The institutes have been held since 2003, and each features a new topic, is set in a new location, and lasts between 10 days and one month. more...
