Research

The College of Sciences recognizes research as an essential tool not only for gathering and disseminating new information, but also for education.  Of the $48 milion received in sponsored programs and awards for the fiscal year 2007, the College of Sciences received 44 percent.  Allowing students to participate in the growth of their fields through research enables them to succeed both in academia as well as applied sciences.

As an example of our initiative to support research, UTSA is currently building a new engineering building to complement the Biotechnology, Sciences and Engineering Building (BSE) constructed in 2005.   At 227,000-square-foot and five-stories, the BSE is the largest at UTSA and one of the largest research-related educational centers in Texas. The building includes 70 research and instructional laboratories that will facilitate interdisciplinary research and collaboration between scientists and engineers. The facility accommodates graduate students studying biotechnology, biology, biomedical engineering, electrical and civil engineering, and chemistry.
