2006 - 2007 1st Quarter Recipient
Business Affairs is proud to recognize Ms. Wendy McCoy, Laboratory Safety Officer, Environmental Health, Safety, and Risk Management, as the 1st quarter recipient of the Celebrating Excellence Award for FY 2007. Wendy's initiative and commitment resulted in a nearly flawless inspection report from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) for the BSL-3 (high-risk) laboratories on campus. She coordinated all of the efforts necessary to make the inspection a success and assured that the more than $7.8 million of research in these laboratories could continue. As a result of Wendy's excellent communication and coordination, inspectors left the UTSA campus knowing that UTSA takes monitoring and oversight of the Select Agent Program seriously and that safety in these important facilities is not left to chance. This was the first annual inspection for the new BSL-3 laboratory in the Margaret Tobin Laboratory Building. Wendy's preparation was thorough and required communication and coordination with researchers, regulators, Facilities maintenance staff and others. Through her exceptional attention to detail, Wendy assured that all required training had been completed and was properly documented; manuals updated for both of the BSL-3 laboratories; laboratories inspected to ensure everything was in order; helped review and organize all of the documentation required by the regulatory agency; worked with the principal investigators to assure that their chemical and select agent inventories were in order; escorted maintenance personnel into the laboratories to allow maintenance to be carried out; helped to plan and carry out the required incident and security response drill; and coordinated the annual certification for the laboratories. Wendy accepted the challenge of change when she stepped up to assure that the new BSL-3 laboratory in the Margaret Tobin Laboratory Building was ready in every way for this critical inspection. Employees like Wendy who rise to meet the challenge of growth and change, reach out to new faces at UTSA; communicate effectively what needs to be accomplished to succeed demonstrate excellence and will help UTSA achieve its goal of becoming a Tier One Research Institution. Wendy, thank you for all your initiative, attention to detail, commitment to excellence and service to the university and Business Affairs. Congratulations!
