Business Affairs is proud to recognize Robert Peek, Construction Planner, Facilities, as a 1st quarter recipient of the Celebrating Excellence Award for FY 2009.
Due to heavy Facilities capital project workload, and his extensive construction expertise, Robert volunteered to be the Facilities Project Coordinator for the new University Center Phase III (UC III) Expansion Project. His attention to detail during the early construction period identified potential workmanship issues with the project roofing contractor that if not addressed, could easily have lead to serious roof problems within the facility. His timely actions in effectively communicating his concerns to facilities leadership resulted in process changes including the unique idea of providing increased roofing construction oversight using professional roofing consultants to assure a high quality finished roofing system. This process in now used on all major UTSA building projects.
Robert also identified discrepancies in the contractor’s construction schedule that threatened to delay the planned opening of the UC III. His identification of impending project delays due to the slow rate of electrical wiring and component installation resulted in bi-weekly senior management meetings and the contractor’s action to dedicate additional electrical crews to the project. Through Roberts’s extraordinary efforts the project was completed on time, and under budget.
The reaction received from UTSA students and staff regarding the new facility has been overwhelmingly positive. As John Kaulfus, Associate Vice President and Dean of Students, states, “Robert was an excellent partner in many ways. First and foremost, he was always there looking out for UTSA’s best interest and overseeing all the major construction issues and installations."
