Lab exercise 5-extra (100 points), due in three weeks right before the class on March 5, 2009

Student name: ______________

Hydro-NEXRDA rainfall and comparison with MPE in a watershed scale

Purpose: Get familiar with the hydro-NEXRDA system and start to order data and make comparison with MPE data.

Step 1: go to the website: http://hydro-nexrad.net/hydronexrad_v0.7/index.html and get familiar with the system. Watch this video from a graduate student at UT Austin as a tutorial.

Step 2: download the rainfall data (hourly) in the same month as your MPE data used in the Lab3, using "the selecting basin" mode (for example: hydrological unit 1210), with Lat/log grid and ArcASCII data format

(note: as I talked with Dr. Krajewski who advised me do not let students download many data they do not need, since each order takes computing resources from them. Since you already know in your specific month, which dates had rainfall events, if you only select those dates to order data, it would be better. thanks for your attention!).

Step 3: convert the ArcASCII into GIS grid file, then define the projection to geographic and WGS84, then reproject them to the same projection used for MPE. you might use the same AML script to do the job.

Step 4: get the hourly rainfall from both hydro-NEXRAD and MPE for a same area (a watershed, a small catchment, or just define rectangle area)

Step 5: compare the products in both probability of event detection and rainfall amount estimates

Step 6: report the results.
