Buy Recycled
![]() |
The Purchasing Department encourages all University faculty and staff to complete the "recycling loop" with the BUY RECYCLED program.
Texans have enthusiastically contributed to the recycling process by sorting and saving recyclable material. Buy Recycled is a statewide program to enhance the economics of recycling by creating markets for the recycled materials.
Consumer demand drives the recycling process, and demand for products made of or packaged in recycled material will inspire manufacturers to continue using recycled materials in their products.
Why Buy Recycled Products?
- Quality products are available to meet almost any specifications.
- Unless you are buying recycled, you are not recycling.
- Texas law requires state agencies to buy recycled goods.
- Recycling makes good economic sense.
Texas Legislative Mandates
- State agencies must spend a minimum of 8 percent of their consumable procurement budget on recycled or environmentally sensitive goods and report the purchases annually to the Legislative Budget Board, Lt. Governor, and Governor (SB 1051).
- State agencies must buy and use motor oil that contains at least 25 percent recycled oil, if price and quality are comparable to new oil (SB 1340).
