(Aug. 14, 2017) -- The 2017-18 school year kicks off this week at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) with Roadrunner Days. More than 8,000 freshmen and transfers will join Roadrunner Nation, participating in dozens of campus-wide events and activities to get into the school spirit.
Before the students hit the books and start attending their classes, they’ll experience the fun and excitement of Roadrunner Days, August 18-27. The celebration welcomes new students and allows them to participate in time-honored UTSA traditions.
Most of the Class of 2021 will officially arrive on campus on Friday, August 18 during Move-In Day. More than 4,000 excited students and their families will transform UTSA’s residence halls into their new homes. Move-in will continue through Saturday, August 19.
A week of exciting campus activities like the Library Survival Adventure, Late Night at the Rec, Kickback at the UC, the Howdy Rowdy Bash and the class photo will help the new 'Runners get acclimated to the UTSA life.
Freshman and transfer students will unite under one roof for Convocation on Monday, August 21 at 10 a.m. The annual ceremony kick-starts the new academic year and marks the first step the Roadrunners will take in their higher education journey of discovery. Students will hear from fellow students and campus leaders including UTSA President Taylor Eighmy. They will also become immersed in new Roadrunner traditions when they learn the UTSA Fight Song, Roadrunner Creed and Alma Mater.
New this year to Roadrunner Days is the Student Success Series. These engaging sessions will explore student success topics, from managing finances to protecting your digital reputation. UTSA will also host Networking Receptions to give new and returning students the opportunity to connect. Topics and schedules for each event can be found on the Roadrunner Days website.
Before students head off to bed before the first day of class, they will make memories at the Midnight Light, scheduled at 11:30 p.m. on Monday, August 21. Join The Spirit of San Antonio Marching Band (SOSA), fellow students, and faculty and staff as UTSA lights the Monument at the Main Campus entrance at the stroke of midnight to mark the start of a new academic year.
And who would say no to a free meal? Students will wrap up the first day of class at the President's BBQ on the Lawn from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 22. Hang out with friends and enjoy live music and a free Texas-sized BBQ dinner. There’s also the President's BBQ on the Plaza at the Downtown Campus from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 23.
