(Aug. 17, 2017) -- As more than 4,000 students prepare to move into their new homes at UTSA, new furniture is also moving onto Main Campus. Crews have begun installing new, contemporary weather-resistant aluminum furniture in the Sombrilla Plaza and John Peace Library Pavilion overlooking Tom Frost Plaza. The tables and chairs, featuring wood-looking slats, replace the teak furniture that has been on campus for several decades.
The new Sombrilla furniture is good for the environment. It’s made of aluminum and poly-teak slats that can be recycled at the end of its service life. The UTSA community can still enjoy some of the furniture that was moved out of the Sombrilla. The tables and chairs that are still in good condition have been spread out at different locations across campus.
“Poly-teak slats are a sustainable choice because they will last longer in the elements than traditional wood,” said Benjamin Perry, UTSA director of Facilities Planning and Development and university architect. “This saves wood to be used in more appropriate and long-lasting ways, such as inside of buildings.”
The Sombrilla furniture upgrade is one of several that have taken place this summer at UTSA. The Main Building ground level corridor now features new seating with tables and integrated power stations, high top tables and stools. The Arts Building has new lounge seating and high top tables and stools. Students can also enjoy the new Parc Vue benches in the JPL Pavilion.
UTSA is ranked among the top 400 universities in the world and among the top 100 in the nation, according to Times Higher Education.
