(Oct. 19, 2017) -- When Fiesta San Antonio rolls around next year, a University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) student will be a part of the Fiesta royalty. Carla Juarez, a senior Honors College student and accounting major, has been crowned Miss Fiesta San Antonio 2018.
“I'm incredibly humbled to be a part of the Miss Fiesta tradition and can't wait to begin leaving my own legacy within the city through my project,” Juarez said.”While Fiesta is still a few months away I am already excited to take part in the celebration and to see fellow Roadrunners out and about!”
Juarez has spent the past two years at UTSA working with student leaders and administrators to improve the university and increase student involvement. The 21 year-old has served as student body secretary for the UTSA Student Government Association, vice-president for the First to Go and Graduate organization, an Involvement Ambassador, and as a member of the University Center, University Assembly, and First Gen Councils. Her future plans include pursuing a master’s degree in accounting and staying connected to the San Antonio community by serving as an advocate for education.
At an early age, Juarez struggled to learn in school due to a language barrier. Despite this, she worked hard to excel in the classroom and achieved the distinction of salutatorian upon graduating high school. Through her community service project proposal, the first-generation Roadrunner hopes to educate young students in underperforming public schools to become better students. She also wants to start a book drive to encourage reading at home, school presentations and community outreach events.
