UTSA Financial Aid

Financial Aid

Financial Aid is those programs/services that provide a student and/or parent with means of securing money to go toward the payment of college costs. The specific programs/services that are managed through UTSA's Financial Aid Office are the ones most commonly associated with Financial Assistance, grants, scholarships, loans, and work-study employment on-campus. The first step to be considered for any grants, loans, or work study is to apply for financial aid.

It is for this reason that our recommendation is that all students apply for financial assistance. There is no way to determine one's eligibility without all the information. It costs nothing to apply except a little time.

The initial application for financial aid is the form provided through the federal government, used by most colleges, universities, and trade schools across the country, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

By listing UTSA (Code 010115) when completing the FAFSA, the results of the FAFSA, including the EFC, are automatically forwarded to our Financial Aid office after about 2-3 weeks for the online application and about 4-6 weeks for the paper application. The UTSA Priority Deadline is March 31st.

Grants

By completing the FAFSA, you have completed the application process for most Federal and State Grant programs. Your award letter will specify the types of loans, grants, and work study for which you qualify. However, you will need to then apply for the loans in which you are interested.

NOTE:
After receiving your awards, the next step is to complete a Student Information Form.

LOANS:
Loans are an important and valuable means of financial assistance. Any major investment in one's lifetime (car, house, major appliance) will require borrowing money to make the investment a reality. A college degree and its ever growing value is well worth this monetary commitment.

STAFFORD LOANS:
All first-time borrowers of the Stafford Loan must complete an on-line counseling session. Also, due to UTSA's commitment to assisting students with making informed decisions, loan management information is also available.

Work-Study Program

A Work study job definitely provides the most student-friendly environment in which to work. Eligibility for a Work-Study position is based upon a student's financial situation as determined by the FAFSA and the availability of work-study positions at UTSA at the time of your financial aid award. If you qualify for a work study position, it will be noted in your financial aid award.

Scholarships

There are over 700 scholarship programs coordinated by UTSA's scholarship team, ranging in value from a few hundred to several thousand dollars. UTSA's General Scholarship deadline for the 2008 Academic term is February 15.
