Orientation to UTSA
Rowdy Ties
Due to the importance of what happens at these orientation, parents & family members are often interested in attending. That is welcomed, but not required. A separate orientation experience called Rowdy Ties is conducted in conjunction with a student's Roundup program. Space for guests is limited and is filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Orientation, Advising, & Registration
As a future Roadrunner, an important next step for you will be attending a "Roadrunner Roundup" (freshmen orientation).
All freshmen are required to participate in Roadrunner Roundup. Attendance at a Roadrunner Roundup program will not only answer your questions but prepare you for the college experience at UTSA. It is during the Roadrunner Roundup (orientation) that you are advised for and register for your classes.
Fall 2008 Roadrunner Roundup Programs at the 1604 campus are three-day events scheduled for the middle of the week. They start on Tuesday and end on Thursday. For the Downtown campus, the Roundup is a two day event.
The first Roadrunner Roundup Program will be offered in mid-June and they will run continuously throughout the summer to early August. The week of July 4th is the only week when a program is not offered.
One of the exciting dimensions of the Roundup Programs is the overnight component. Due to the intensity, importance, and thoroughness of these events, participants are required to stay on campus Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. All students are housed together in Chaparral Village.
Determining when and where to sign-up for a Roundup Program can be dependent on one's academic status or major.
- Students accepted in to any of the following academic programs can only make a reservation to attend the designated Roundup for their special program. Please be aware that some Roadrunner Roundup programs may be available at only one campus and only in certain terms of admission. The special programs are as follows:
- ACE Access College Excel Scholar Program
- ADP Academic Development Program
- CAP Coordinated Admissions Program
- Students majoring in Architecture will be enrolling in classes almost exclusively at the Downtown campus, so attending a Downtown program is advisable.
The registration process for the Roundup Programs is designed for the status of the student accessing the sight. Only the program(s) appropriate for the student will be accessible from the website. So the process of determining the correct and/or appropriate programs is done for the student.
One of the final and most exciting activities of Roadrunner Roundup is academic advising. UTSA is aware of the importance of accessible and professional academic advising. First-time freshmen are advised by professional academic advisors in one of two centers, the Tomas Rivera Center or the Colleges' Freshmen Advising Center.
Tomás Rivera Center
Students fitting into one of the following categories will work with the TRC during the Freshmen Year.
An undecided/undeclared major
Provisionally admitted & participating in the Academic Development Program
A participant in the ACE program
Colleges' Freshmen Advising Center
All other first-time freshmen will work with advisors in our Colleges' Freshmen Advising Center.
There is a charge for the Roadrunner Roundup experience. The Orientation website provides a full review of those costs. However, these fees are not paid in advance. All fees will be included on the tuition and fees bill for the appropriate semester, including fees for the Family Ties programming, if applicable.
