Per catalog requirements, students from other colleges and universities seeking admission into UTSA College of Architecture, for both Architecture and Interior Design, are required to submit a portfolio for review. Although a student may receive transfer credit for classes taken at other institutions, the portfolio is a critical part of the process by which the student is placed within the studio sequence in our design program. The review of the portfolio is based upon the content of the design studio sequence in our program. Students will not be admitted into the advanced design studios without a portfolio submission. In addition, the student’s record will be reviewed for transfer credit and/or completion of prerequisite courses as required prior to advancing to the third year of study. Late submissions will be reviewed for the next semester’s admittance.
The Portfolio Review Committee will evaluate your portfolio to determine your level of abilities within the studio portion of your education, and will place you in the appropriate design studio. The Committee is composed of design faculty from the first through third years, and is under the direction of the Department Chair. A student applying for admission into the 3rd year of the studio sequence who does not pass, may be required to complete deficient coursework considered as a prerequisite, or may be required to repeat a design studio. It may be possible for the student to take the necessary studio during the 10 week summer session when such a studio is available.
materials to be included Admission to the third year of the Architecture or Interior Design Program is a competitive process which represents the development of your abilities nearing the end of your second year level. It is based on our desire to best facilitate your completion and success in our design program. Your work, including the design of the portfolio, is the vehicle through which you communicate the full range and depth of your design understanding, past work, and future directions as they pertain to design achievement. The ‹portfolio review checklist› should serve as a guide. Your work will be evaluated based upon the criteria, issues, topics, and concepts as covered in the design studios (‹design i - iv›), the checklist provides an outline, which assists the review process. Please note that there is no difference between the requirements and review of the work of architecture or interior design students, or the work of continuing, ‹in-house› students and those transfer-ring into our program from another school. In addition to materials outlined on the checklist, your portfolio may include other types of work which present your knowledge, aptitude, and experience.
Aside from sketches, design development from conception and early schematic design through the resolution of the building in plan, section, elevation, and details are especially appropriate. Be sure to present evidence of design skills from all previous design studios. Work, which demonstrates ability in design and the visual arts, may include graphic design, photography, film, painting, and sculpture. The successful portfolio will be considered a work of design itself. The clarity, precision, care, and thought by which you design and lay out the pages communicates and presents your level of understanding. Please clearly indicate the course, project, design team (where applicable), project description, and other written information or descriptions as required to better inform the review committee.
