UTSA Department of Architecture Faculty Searches – 2011-2012

The Department of Architecture at the University of Texas invites qualified individuals to apply for three to four tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, beginning in August 2012, pending budget approval.

Architectural Design Positions

Teaching responsibilities include architectural design studios and lecture/seminar courses, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, in areas in which the candidate has an expertise and which compliment or expand the architecture and interior design curricula. Current areas of Interest within the program include building technology, sustainability, architectural history, urban design, regionalism, historic preservation, theory and criticism.

Building Technology / Design Positions

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate potential for conducting scholarly research in their area of focus, for linking their research interests with their teaching, and providing leadership in teaching and research. Areas of focus may include sustainable design, building performance analysis, building systems integration, advanced and high performance building systems, building envelope systems, electric and daylight systems, life cycle analysis, CFD analysis, energy efficient buildings, or related areas. Teaching responsibilities include building technology courses and architectural design studios at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as supervision of research students and participation in studio reviews.

Requirements

Successful candidates for all positions should be able to demonstrate expertise in their area of focus along with the ability to integrate their specialty area into the design studio. Further, successful candidates are expected to conduct original research in their area of focus commensurate with their qualifications. In addition, successful candidates are expected to make service contributions both within the University, College, and Department as well as make service contributions within the community. Courses are offered either at the UTSA downtown Campus or the Main Campus.

Minimum degree requirements for these positions include either a Master of Architecture degree or a terminal degree in Architecture accompanied by professional experience. Preferred qualifications include professional registration, previous teaching experience in the discipline, or a Ph.D.

All positions are open at the rank of Assistant and Associate Professor. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and the applicant must designate the rank for which they would like to be considered. Candidates must have completed all requirements for the Master of Architecture degree by the date of hire or, if ABD, able to complete their Ph.D. within one year of the date of hire. Candidates for hire at the rank of Associate Professor must be able to demonstrate a track record or research / scholarship in their area of expertise, effectiveness in teaching, involvement with curriculum development, and a record of service commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor. Tenure will be considered for qualified Associate hires.

The Department of Architecture offers fully accredited degree programs in Architecture (M. Arch) and Interior Design (BS Interior Design) and a research degree, an MS in Architecture. The department is housed within the College of Architecture (COA) which has programs in Construction Science and Management (BSCSM), Urban and Regional Planning (MSURP), Certificates in Historic Preservation and Urban and Regional Planning and two research centers: the Center for Cultural Sustainability and Center for Urban and Regional Planning Research. With 1,200 undergraduate and graduate students, the COA is supported by full-time faculty members and adjunct faculty drawn from the local design and construction community. The COA is located in downtown San Antonio, one of America's oldest and most culturally diverse cities where design, construction and research find unique topics of inquiry. The College's faculty is committed to education, and to building an institution that fosters intellectual excellence and collegiality.

  1. Letter of interest must provide a narrative statement that describes in 1 to 2 pages the position and rank applied for, qualifications for the position, area of expertise, plans for future research/creative practice, and pedagogical approach.
  2. Curriculum vita and/or resume. If candidate is currently working toward a terminal degree, please give evidence of graduate hours completed.
  3. List of at least three references and provide all contact information.
  4. Sample publications or a 15 to 20 page non-returnable portfolio(PDF): provide work that is representative of research/creative practice, teaching ability, and some student work.
