Office of Information Technology hosts Aug. 21 retirement receptionThe UTSA Office of Information Technology will host a retirement reception for four longtime members of the UTSA community. The event will be 2-4 p.m., Friday, Aug. 21 in the University Center Denman Room (2.01.28) on the Main Campus. The university community is invited to the reception to greet the honorees, all of whom will retire at the end of August:
Each of these staff members has been integral to the success of the department and helped to implement changes that improved efficiency and effectiveness.
UTSA provost's office accepting Core Values Initiative program proposalsFaculty proposals for fall 2009 Core Values Initiative programs are being accepted now through the offices of the deans and should be submitted for review to Debra Jamison in the Office of the Provost. The deadline for funding consideration for fall 2009 programs is Tuesday, Sept. 1. Under the leadership of UTSA Provost John Frederick, the Core Values Initiative began last spring as a way to foster UTSA's core values of integrity, excellence, inclusiveness, respect, collaboration and innovation. Recreation Center closes Aug. 19-20 for student staff trainingTo better serve patrons, the Recreation Center at the Main Campus and the Fitness Center at the Downtown Campus will be closed Wednesday-Thursday, Aug. 19-20 for student staff training. Normal hours will resume Friday, Aug. 21. More information: 458-7575
Fall Convocation opens new academic year Aug. 24The 2009 Fall Convocation will be 10-11:30 a.m., Monday, Aug. 24 in the Convocation Center with the theme "Your Journey Begins." San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro will be the keynote speaker. The Fall Convocation will be video streamed live. Faculty and staff marching in the procession will meet at 9:30 a.m. in the University Center Ballroom foyer. Procession participants are encouraged to wear academic regalia, but may wear UTSA colors. Procession marchers are invited to the Faculty and Staff Convocation Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. in the University Center Ballroom (1.104). Advance reservations are required. To make a breakfast reservation, call 458-4770 or e-mail engaged@utsa.edu by Friday, Aug. 21 with name and college or department. College orientations and lunch will follow the ceremony at various locations on the Main Campus; students from the College of Architecture and the College of Public Policy will be bused to the Downtown Campus for their college orientations and lunch.
UTSA students, faculty, staff can ride VIA free on routes 93 and 94Traveling between the UTSA Downtown and Main campuses is easy, convenient and best of all -- it's free for students, faculty and staff taking VIA routes 93 and 94. Just show your UTSACard to the bus operator and you're good to go. The service is provided by UTSA through a prepaid bus service agreement with VIA Metropolitan Transit. Read details on UTSA Today.
New dashboard permit allows parking after hangtag orderingIf you haven't ordered a parking permit, now is the time to place your order online -- last year's permits expire Thursday, Aug. 20. Parking permits must be ordered online. The benefits are no waiting in long lines and the ability to order a permit any time of day through the ASAP information system. And, beginning Saturday, Aug. 15, there will be a new service as part of parking permit ordering. UTSA permit buyers will be able to print a dashboard permit, valid for 7 days, at the completion of their online order. While the permit buyer awaits the arrival of the hangtag permit by U.S. mail, the dashboard permit will allow them to park on campus without the worry of ticketing. Read more on UTSA Today.
Elevator and stair chair inspections will briefly interrupt service Aug. 17-19There will be required annual state inspections of Tri-campus elevators and stair chairs between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Aug. 17-19. Main Campus inspections will be Aug. 17, and Downtown Campus and HemisFair Park Campus inspections will be Aug. 18-19. UTSA community admitted free to San Antonio Museum of ArtUTSA students, faculty and staff receive free admission to the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) simply by presenting their UTSACard. The special benefit is a result of the university's corporate benefactor membership to SAMA. Museum hours are 10 a.m.-9 p.m., Tuesday; 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday-Saturday; and noon-6 p.m., Sunday. University Career Center hosts Aug. 27 work-study job fairThe UTSA University Career Center will host a work-study job fair from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 27 on the University Center second floor between Retama Auditorium (2.02.02) and the University Career Center (Room 2.02.04) on the Main Campus. UTSA departments needing to hire work-study students are encouraged to register for a table at the event, where they can meet students who qualify for work-study financial aid. Registration is free and includes one table with two chairs, a department sign and access to University Career Center interview rooms. To register, visit the University Career Center Jobbank Web site, select the "Career Events" tab and then select "Fall 2009 Work-Study Job Fair." University Heights-Main Campus shuttle service ends because of low useThe Transportation Services division of UTSA Business Auxiliary Services pilot program providing shuttle service between University Heights and the Main Campus ended Wednesday, Aug. 12. The pilot program allowed collection of information about the need for shuttle service between the two locations. The trial period began March 3 and was expanded to two full days per week on June 16. Ridership consistently averaged less than one passenger per operating hour. Because of low use, permanent shuttle service to University Heights most likely will not be provided. It's time to appoint departmental inventory contactsUTSA departments must appoint an Inventory Contact Person (ICP) for each department/unit code in preparation for the FY 2010 annual physical inventory beginning in November 2009. All departments must appoint an ICP to be responsible for scanning departmental equipment inventory tags. The ICP will be required to attend initial or refresher training. Reminder: removal-of-equipment forms expire soonRemoval-of-equipment forms dated for return on Aug. 31 will expire soon. The form is valid for only one year from the removal date.
