Organizational Changes to EHSRM

October 14, 2019

In a continuing effort to advance and align operations and services with the university’s administrative efficiency initiative, Business Affairs is making organizational changes to its Environmental Health, Safety and Risk Management (EHSRM) department.

Effective Tuesday, October 15, EHSRM services will be provided through a distributed model that streamlines decision making and groups employees with similar functions.

Staff in ESHRM will be distributed among four key areas:

  • Facilities: Environmental Management
  • Human Resources: Employee Benefits & Wellness
  • Research Integrity: Hazardous Waste Management
  • Public Safety: Emergency & Risk Management

Since risk management is an institutional responsibility, John De La Hunt, risk and life safety manager, will serve as chair of a new university-wide Risk Management Advisory Committee that will include membership from all of the areas listed above.

“Our fundamental goal is to deliver quality services and projects through excellence in customer service,” says Veronica Mendez, Vice President for Business Affairs. “This shift allows staff to move away from a monitoring and reporting approach to having greater involvement in the decision-making process by placing subject matter experts within each functional area.”

Most ESHRM employees will remain in their existing work locations and their services will still be provided by them.

Business Affairs will continue to assess and identify ways it can best create efficiencies and implement best practices throughout its organization in order to serve and support UTSA’s mission.
