COS Outreach Workshop

The objective of this workshop is to bring prevalent and basic control system technologies to the awareness of high-school students in San Antonio. The workshop is funded and supported by UTSA and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)—the world's largest technical professional organization (the United Nations of engineering). By promoting the importance control system technologies, we hope that more students will be interested in pursuing careers geared towards engineering and more specifically to controls and systems sciences. The outreach plan will be a three-day workshop with students from three high schools in San Antonio coming from low-income families. The workshop will be hosted at UTSA and advertised through College of Engineering outreach office and website and by sending flyers to high schools. In addition, the project lead will visit the schools to advertise and inform students about the three-day event. The workshop will be free of charge and will include various incentives such as certificates, guest speakers, and tours of UTSA labs and facilities. We will also contact local media outlets to cover the event.
The first part of the workshop will be an introduction to control system applications that students are familiar with, e.g., temperature control in buildings, driverless cars, drones, control of human body temperature, and other relatable examples. We will also introduce students to IEEE's mission and objectives. The second part will involve covering the very basics of control systems. The third part will involve hands-on experiments with robots in an attempt to attract more high school students to careers in engineering and controls. The fourth part—the major part of the workshop—will involve team competitions to design a mobile car that can drive around obstacles Teams of students will be judged based on a weighted grade of maximum speed of the car, fastest lap, and how many times the car swerved away from the track. Finally, the workshop will conclude with announcing various awards for best performing teams in the aforementioned competition, and certificates and medals for all attending students. All students will be asked to submit a pre- and post-workshop survey.
