  • Postdoctoral Fellow: 1977-1980, University of California at San Diego
  • Postdoctoral Fellow: 1976-1977, The Mayo Clinic
  • Ph.D., Biochemistry: 1976, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
  • B.S., Biology: 1972, University of South Carolina

Research Interests

  • Muscular Dystrophy and Signal transduction: Dystrophin, the protein product of the Duchenne muscular dystrophy gene locus, is linked to a signal transduction pathway,
    which links laminin-a-dystroglycan-ß-dystroglycan-dystrophin-syntrophin-Grb2-Sos1-
Rac1-PAK1-MKK4/7-JNK, causing c-jun phosphorylation and activation.
  • Transcription factor purification: We developed oligonucleotide trapping, a method for purifying transcription factors to near homogeneity in a single step. Current experiments involve promoter trapping, a method which interfaces DNA-HPLC with proteomic techniques (MALDI-TOF and ESE-ion trap) to characterize the transcription complex of the c-jun promoter.

Teaching Activities

  • Biochemistry
