Michelle Valero

My name is Michelle Valero.  I am currently a 2nd year Master’s student in the Biology program.  My thesis project is to determine whether the Common Marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is an appropriate model for research in presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss. We have begun testing the marmoset’s hearing by using a non-invasive and time conserving method: measuring otoacoustic emissions.  Specifically, distortion-product (DPOAE) and click-evoked (CEOAE) otoacoustic emissions will be measured as a function of age.  We are also looking for the appearance spontaneous otoacoustic emissions, pure tones produced by the cochlea without stimulus, as they have been reported in humans.
