Promoting a More Civil Campus

In ancient times, Civitas represented and understood expectations of citizenship in the areas of behavior, law, governance, and relationships. As one of three tenets of UTSA, civitas or citizenship is a quality educators hope to instill in our students. Unfortunately, civility among our student body and society at large is often absent. Behavior in classrooms, social settings, athletic fields, and residence halls does not always exemplify the Civitas we hope to inspire. CHOOSE CIVILITY is designed to enhance the transformation of our students in the area of civil interaction. Choose Civility is a week of events that centers on connecting civility to students' lives in tangible ways.

"Courtesy, politeness, manners, and civility are all, in essence, forms of awareness. Being civil means being constantly aware of others and weaving restraint, respect, and consideration on into the very fabric of this awareness. Civility is a form of goodness; it is gracious goodness. But it is not just an attitude of benevolent and thoughtful relation to other individuals; it also entails an active interest in the well-being of our communities and even a concern for the health of the planet on which we live."

Request a "Choose Civility Moment" classroom visit. Classroom visits are currently being scheduled. Staff will visit your classroom and discuss tips for civil discourse; provide civility information in the form of handouts, poster, etc.; and answer any questions students may have about civility on a college campus. The visit lasts about 10 minutes and can be scheduled at any time. To arrange a "Choose Civility Moment" for your class and/or group, please contact SCCS@utsa.edu in Student Conduct and Community Standards.
