College of Sciences

    All scholarships awarded by the College of Sciences require the recipient to

·          be actively pursuing a degree in the College of Sciences

·          unless otherwise stated, be enrolled full time (minimum of 12 hours for undergraduates and 9 hours for graduate students).  

    COLLEGE OF SCIENCES DEAN’S SCHOLARSHIP

    Award:  Number and amount of awards vary

·  Must be an incoming freshman

·  Must have completed no more than 12 hours of college coursework

·  Must have a minimum 3.0 high school GPA and a minimum 3.0 GPA in all college courses taken

·  Must have a minimum SAT sore of 1000 with at least 560 on mathematics section, or a minimum ACT composite score of   24 with at least 25 on the mathematics section

·  Must have completed college preparatory courses, including four years of mathematics section<>

    Application requirements:  COS Dean’s Scholarship Application and high school transcript (which includes SAT/ACT

    SAM MADRID JR. ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

    Award:  Two awards of $1,000

·  Must be a current student at UTSA or an incoming freshman

·  Must have graduated from a San Antonio area high school

·  Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

·  Must be a U.S. citizen

·  Must demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA

  Application requirements: Sam Madrid Scholarship Application, one letter of recommendation and 250—500 word essay

    DR. HAROLD G. LONGBOTHAM ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

    Award:  One award; amount varies

·  Graduate and undergraduate students must be enrolled full time and be pursuing a degree in mathematics, physics, statistics or engineering

·  Undergraduate applicants must be at least a junior

·  Must have a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA

    Application requirements:   Application form, two recommendation forms completed by UTSA faculty and a 600-          <sword (or less) essay

    EMILY ZACHRY ANSLEY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

    Award:  One award; amount varies.  Rotated annually between the College of Sciences and the College of Business.

·  Must be a Texas resident and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident

·  Must demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA

·  Must be a declared major in the College of Sciences

·  Must have earned at least 30 hours with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA 

Application requirements:  Application form, two recommendation forms completed by UTSA faculty and a 600-word (or less) essay

   BERNARD P. SAGIK ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

    Award:  One award of $1,000; renewable up to four years

·     Must maintain 2.8 GPA each term

·     Must be an undergraduate student enrolled full time majoring in the College of Sciences with at least 24 semester hours of coursework at UTSA

·  Preference given to applicants who are the first generation of their family to attend or graduate from an institution of higher education

Application requirements:  Application form including, 500 to 1,000word statement of background and academic goals

DR. B. THYAGARAJAN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

Award:  Number and amount of awards vary

·  Must be a freshman or sophomore student enrolled full time pursuing a degree at UTSA in chemistry, geology or physics

·  Entering freshmen must have a minimum SAT score of 860 or minimum ACT score of 18 and rank in the top 50 percent of their high school graduating class

·  Current UTSA students must have a minimum 206 cumulative GPA

·  Preference given to students demonstrating financial need as determined by the FAFSA

    Application requirements:  Application form, one letter of recommendation preferable from a teacher, and a copy of your        <spcollege or high school transcripts

    Award:  One award; amount varies.  Renewable on a competitive basis.

·  Must be a declared undergraduate major in the College of Sciences with at least 30 semester credit hours

·  Must be a Texas resident

·  Must have a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA

·  Must be enrolled full time (minimum 12 semester credit hours)

    Application requirements:  Application form, two recommendation forms completed by UTSA faculty, and furnish a                statement on most distinctive honor in academics

    ROBERT A. WELCH FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

    Award:  Up to $3,300 for undergraduate students; up to $3,500 for graduate students; number of            awards varies

·  Must be majoring in chemistry

·  Must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students

    Application requirements:  One page explanation of research project and goals and career goals

    Deadline:  Varies; inquire at the department office (mid-April)

· Be actively pursuing a degree in the College of Sciences

· Unless otherwise stated, be enrolled full time (minimum of 12 hours for undergraduates and 9 hours for graduate students).

     ALLEN N. MARTINESE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN COMPUTER SCIENCE

    Award:  One award of $700 a year (awarded in the spring semester)

·     Must be majoring in computer science

·     Must have completed at least 30 hours

·     Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

    Application requirements:  Allen N. Martinese Scholarship

    Application, two letters of recommendation from UTSA faculty

    Members and a 600 word essay

    Deadline:  March 31

    MICHAEL MALTRUD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP IN COMPUTER SCIENCE

    Award:   $1,500 for the academic year ($750 per semester) if funds are available

·  Must be a full time UTSA graduate or undergraduate majoring in computer science

·  Must have completed at least 60 hours

·  Primary preference will be given to graduates of Marshall High School in San Antonio, Texas.  Additional preference will be given to those who demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA

    Application requirements:  College of Sciences Scholarship Application, two letters of recommendation from UTSA    <spDepartment of Computer Science faculty members and a one page essay describing themselves and their goals

    Award:  $1,500 for the academic year ($750 per semester) awarded every other year, if funds are available

·  The scholarship is awarded based on academic excellence and need as determined by the department scholarship committee

    DR. JAMES O. JONES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

·  The scholarship is awarded based on academic excellence, need and excellence of the proposal as determined by the department scholarship committee

         JONES-AMSBURY RESEARCH GRANT.

     Award:  Up to $1,000 to support student (undergraduate or graduate) research directly related to the geology of South Texas.

     Deadline:  March 31.  Awards are made by May 31.  Application is made to the STGS.

     FIELD CAMP SCHOLARSHIP

     Award:  March 31.  Application is made to the STGS. 

    CHARIMAN’S AWARD

    Award:  $500

    The award goes to a “meritorious, needy or otherwise qualified student” as recommended to the chairman by the                     departmental scholarship committee.  The recipient’s name is submitted to the STGS before the end of April.

    Award:  15 junior/senor awards of $10,956; tuition and fees and $1,200 travel allowance

·  Must be an undergraduate majoring in the field of chemistry or biology

·  Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

·  Must be committed to attending graduate school and pursuing a career in biomedical research

·  Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident

·  Preference given to students with a disadvantaged background

   Application requirements:  Two letters of recommendation and statement describing career goals; contact MBRS/MARC     <sOffice for more information.

   MBRS/RISE MINORITY BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH SUPPORT/RESEARCH IN SCIENCE ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM

    Award:  $850 travel allowance; $11,200 for juniors and seniors; awards of $13,500 plus tuition and fees for graduate     <sstudents; number of awards varies

·  Must be majoring in the field of chemistry or biology

·  Must possess a sincere interest in pursuing a biomedical research career
