Welcome

Dr. George Perry, Dean of the College of Sciences

Welcome to UTSA’s College of Sciences. This is an exciting time for the College as we strive toward UTSA’s goal of becoming a premier research institution. In line with this goal is our increasing number of programs funded by, among others, the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. As such, the College of Sciences offers unparalleled opportunities to participate in cutting-edge, world-class research in areas such as information security, cell and molecular biology, neuroscience, and environmental remediation, to name but a select few.

Further facilitating this research effort is our new $83.7 million 227,000-square-foot Biotechnology, Sciences and Engineering Building, which opened in the spring of 2006. This is the largest building at UTSA and is one of the biggest classroom facilities in the UT System. The building houses offices and laboratories for some of our new faculty and research programs, and expands learning and research opportunities for students.

We are also proud to be ranked #1 in the U.S. in the number of degrees in the biological sciences awarded to Hispanics and #9 in the number of mathematics degrees awarded to Hispanics. Our students often receive financial assistance to gain the hands-on research experience that will lead to profitable future academic and business careers.

I am honored to join efforts to move UTSA to major research university status. I have never seen such broad-based enthusiasm and commitment to increasing excellence in scholarship and educational opportunities. This is one of the main reasons why I left Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio to take on the position as Dean of the UTSA’s College of Sciences. I look forward to embracing the San Antonio community in these goals and working to promote development in South Texas.

I invite you to join us and take your own personal voyage of learning and discovery.
