Advising Services Offered

The CoSUAC serves UTSA undergraduates (sophomores-seniors) & newly admitted transfer students. We provide assistance with: University policies and procedures, degree requirements, CoS minor requirements, course selection, GPA improvement and graduation review.

The COSUAC Advising Syllabus explains in detail how the COSUAC can assist you in meeting your academic goals.

The COSUAC Staff Can Assist You With the Following:

Prerequisites Checks
In April 2005, UTSA implemented a prerequisite check system in order to ensure proper course sequencing. Students who do not have the appropriate prerequisites will be blocked from registering for the course. Students who have correct prerequisites and are unable to register may receive assistance in CoSUAC.

The course prerequisites are listed with the course description in the current catalog. They are set up by the departments to ensure that you have the necessary background knowledge to do well in that course. Prerequisites can be waived with the signature of the instructor and the department. Check the prerequisite website http://www.utsa.edu/advise/GOTPREREQS.htm

To read more about how to check your Prerequisites( Flyer), please see the linked flyer.

Transfer Advising
COS Advisors assist newly admitted transfer students in determining how their transferred coursework applies to their UTSA degree.  For more info on transferring to UTSA in the College of Sciences, see the "Tips for transferring students" on the Helpful Info page of this website.

If you would like to check for a specific course yourself, please go to https://asap.utsa.edu/pls/prod/xwgktreq.p_transequiv Follow the directions and find out if the course you took transfers as a UTSA equivalent. If that course is not listed, this does not mean that it will not transfer-it could mean only that additional paperwork may be necessary to apply it towards your UTSA degree. You may call the Advising Center at (210) 458-4045 if you still have questions.

If you are a prospective transfer student, see FAQs page for more info.

Strategies for Academic Success
The COSUAC requires that all students within the college who are on probation or were reinstated after academic dismissal participate in the Strategies for Academic Success (SAS) program. This is a program designed as an intervention to students who are having academic difficulty or trouble maintaining the grade point average requirements. The S.A.S. advisors in the College of Sciences Undergraduate Advising Center are trained to connect students to resources that build upon the skills necessary for college success. Four Year Program of Study: Starting September 1, 2007, UTSA placed holds on students who earned 45 or 90 hours in order to require them to have a semester by semester program of study on file with their college advising center. This is explained in further detail in the contract below. Also, a blank four year plan sheet is provided so that you may begin planning for your academic future at UTSA. Have fun filling it out and bring it in to our office to review with your advisor!

Blank Semester-by-Semester Plan

"Focus on Success" group sessions are offered to assist certain student populations. Please visit "Upcoming Events" for a list of these sessions.

Graduation Audits/Reviews:  COS advisors can assist students who are close to graduation and can determine what courses/requirements they have left to complete.  The best time to see if the student is ready is the semester before you plan to graduate.

For more information on graduation, see the FAQs page and the Current/Upcoming Events page.

Extended Hours: The  week before classes begin through census date, the Advising Center has extended walk-in hours and sees students on a walk-in basis only. These weeks are reserved for registration issues, including registration overrides, time conflicts, holds, etc. Graduation checks and degree plans for personal use, financial aid, or VA should be done before or after these weeks.

UNM Advising:  Students who are undecided science majors are listed as undeclared science or UNMs.  Often these are students who are completing health profession prerequisites.  Due to the 45 and 90 hour holds beginning on 9/1/07, these students will need to declare a major-in or out of the College of Sciences.  As pre-health profession students, this may be their back up major or plan B should they not get into their school of choice on the first attempt.

Starting Spring 2007, COSUAC will place a UNM hold on these students to encourage them to declare a major and avoid a 40 or 90 hour hold in Fall 2007.
