2008-2009 SCHOLARSHIPS & AWARDS

Wendy Barker Graduate Creative Writing Award

UTSA Graduate Students are invited to submit 5-10 pages of poetry (one poem on each page) and/or 10-15 pages short fiction or creative non-fiction (prose should be double-spaced; do not submit your only copy). Include ONE cover page with name, mailing address, e-mail address, phone number and titles of all submissions. Submit three copies of work. Your name should not be anywhere else except on the cover page.

Steven G. Kellman Creative Non-Fiction Award

This year’s award amounts are $1,000 for first place award and $500 for second place. Applicants must be enrolled full time (12 credit hours) in an undergraduate degree program at UTSA, with a cumulative 3.0 GPA.

To apply, please submit a creative non-fiction essay of up to 4,000 words, a completed Application Form, and a cover letter stating work submitted (provide title) is original and previously unpublished.

Applications are due in the English Department by February 15th, 2009

Winners will be asked to read at Wordfest on Friday, April 17th.

 
     

The Davidson-Shaddox Scholarship Award

To be eligible for this award, a student must have (1) declared an undergraduate major in English and have complete at least 60 hours of college credit; (2) be enrolled full time (minimum 12 credit hours); (3) must have a minimum 3.0 GPA in English courses; (4) must enroll in an upper-level creative writing course during the academic year in which the award is given. Award amounts vary and are dependent upon the number of qualified applicants and availability of funds.

To apply, please submit the following:
—Complete Davidson-Shaddox Creative Writing Scholarship Application Form and a cover letter stating work submitted (provide titles) is original and previously unpublished.
—Submission of a creative writing manuscript (poetry or prose).  

Applications are due in the English Department by February 15th, 2009

     

Poetry Foundation's Ruth Lily Fellowship Nomination

The UTSA Creative Writing Committee will nominate one student for a Ruth Lilly Poetry Fellowship in the amount of $15,000. These fellowships are awarded by the Poetry Foundation and are intended to help younger poets continue their study and writing of poetry. To be eligible, a student must be a U.S. citizen 30 years old or younger, and must not have received an advanced degree before the end of the year in which the Fellowship is given. The Wendy Barker Award was established six years ago by Jerald Winakur, M.D., and his wife Lee Robinson Esq., (both writers themselves) in honor of Dr. Wendy Barker, who began her career at UTSA in 1982. Every year this award is given in Dr. Barker's name to a graduate student who has submitted a creative writing manuscript of exceptional quality and promise.

The Davidson-Shaddox Scholarship for undergraduate excellence in creative writing honors Brenda Davidson-Shaddox, an excellent student in our department during the 1980's, and a very talented creative writer, who "wanted to give back something of what the department had given her."
