Mechanical Properties of Ocular Zonules
The zonules are an essential feature of accommodation – the process by which the eye changes its focal length. The zonules transmit the load from the ciliary muscle to the lens capsule and are therefore an integral part of the mechanical mechanism of accommodation. However, the mechanical properties are not well known and linear elastic behavior is always assumed in mechanical models of accommodation, though preliminary testing indicates that the fibers exhibit nonlinear viscoelastic behavior. We will determine this constitutive behavior experimentally using uniaxial extension testing augmented with high-speed video cameras.
