Greater Kelly Foundation gives $100,000 for Scholarships

The Greater Kelly Development Foundation, Inc., the philanthropic arm of the Port of San Antonio (formerly KellyUSA), has contributed $110,000 to UTSA to fund scholarships for Bexar County students studying math, science, engineering and business.

Applications for KellyUSA Scholarship Program

Now Being Accepted

$180,000 Dollars to be Granted to High School Seniors

 

March 23, 2006 - Applications are now being accepted for class of 2006 high school seniors wishing to apply for financial assistance through the KellyUSA Scholarship Program. One hundred, eighty thousand dollars in acad emi c scholarships will be awarded in June to graduating high school seniors wishing to continue their educations at an Alamo Community College District (ACCD) school or at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).

The KellyUSA Scholarship Program offers scholarships to students interested in obtaining two and four-year degrees in Aerospace, Logistics, Math, Science, Engineering, or Business. “This is one of the most gratifying projects that we are involved in,” said Bruce E. Miller, Chief Executive Officer, Greater Kelly Development Authority. “These kids have worked hard and excelled in their studies. They are truly deserving students and it is with great joy and happiness that we are able to help them pursue their dreams.”

A total of eight recipients were awarded scholarships this year. In September Greater Kelly Development Foundation presented $20,000 to the Alamo Community College District (ACCD) and $40,000 to the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). In February it will award another $40,000 to ACCD and another $80,000 to UTSA.

The deadline to apply for scholarships available beginning in the 2006/2007 school year is May 1, 2006. Qualified applicants must reside within Bexar County . About the Class of 2006 UTSA Scholarship Recipients

Marycela Barron

A 2005 graduate, Marycela was very active at Memorial High School as a class leader. She was honored as a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, and participated in the drama club, acad emic decathlon and Latinos Unidos. She came to UTSA with plans to possibly study psychology or science, and hopes to eventually receive a Ph.D. Her career goal is to improve technology to better battle disease and improve life. Away from school, Marycela worked as a lifeguard at SeaWorld and enjoys writing in a journal, exercising and meditating.

 

Amanda Esquivel

Amanda graduated from Providence High School in San Antonio in 2005. She was a varsity cheerleader, competing in national level competitions and attending national camps. Amanda volunteered at a local hospital and was involved in a wide array of other extracurricular activities. Amanda seeks a degree in business and has aspirations for a career as an entrepreneur, establishing her own businesses. She is grateful for the scholarship support as it opens up many opportunities for her and pushes her to excel academically.

 

Castulo Jimenez

Castulo is a 2005 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School in San Antonio . He was on the ‘A’ honor roll in high school and honored with an outstanding student award for superior class performance and effort in the English language arts. He hopes one day to open his own business, so he is pursuing his degree in business. Away from this classroom, Castulo enjoys working on computers and building things.

Marlene Mendez

Marlene desires a career as a Certified Public Accountant, and she prepared for her studies as a student at Business Careers High School in San Antonio . She is enrolled in the Honors College at UTSA, majoring in accounting. A 2005 high school graduate, Marlene was active on the Business Careers High School campus as a member of Interact, the National Honor Society and the marching and concert bands. She was also recognized with membership in Mu Alpha Theta (math honors society) and the English honors society. In the community, she volunteered for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, has spent her free time with residents at the SAMM Shelter, and helped with traditional holiday community service activities like Elf Louise and the Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving Dinner.
