Disability Services
Disability Services coordinates support services and equipment for students with temporary or permanent disabilities. DS strives to provide services that enable students with disabilities to participate in and benefit from all University programs and activities.
Eligibility for services
To be eligible for services a student must:
- apply and be accepted for admission to UTSA through the regular admissions process
- provide current and comprehensive documentation of a temporary or permanent disability that requires accommodation
- schedule an appointment with DS to discuss needs and register for services
Accommodations and Services
Academic accommodations and other services are provided on an individual basis and determined by documented need. Accommodations and services available to qualified students include:
- letters to faculty verifying disability and accommodations
- test accommodations such as extended time, readers or scribes
- volunteer note-takers
- recorded text
- registration assistance
- interpreters for the deaf
- supportive counseling
- accessibility information
- referrals to other campus and community resources
A variety of adaptive equipment is available for students with disabilities. Located in the DS office, the student computing facility and the library, this equipment includes:
- motorized mobility aids
- Teletypewriter (TTY)
- audio enhancement systems
- computer with scanner and speech capabilities
- large print for computer
- voice-activated computer
- braille printer
- closed-circuit televisions
Advocacy
DS is available to students with disabilities to assist or advise with any disability-related concern. DS works to increase awareness through education and outreach.
Federal law prohibits UTSA from making preadmission inquiries about disabilities, so DS may not always know of a student who could greatly benefit from its services. Faculty and staff referrals are greatly appreciated.
