AP® Environmental Science for New Teachers

Workshop Description

The unique focus for the week will be the investigation of the multidisciplinary nature of the AP environmental science curriculum through terrestrial ecology, aquatic ecology and urban design using the vast resources of the San Antonio metropolitan area.

Environmental Science is the most multidisciplinary of the AP science subjects. This workshop will incorporate both lecture and laboratory aspects of the course.

Although designed specifically for those instructors new to teaching the AP Environmental Science course, this course is also appropriate for those who have not attended an APSI recently or have attended an APSI with a different instructor. This course will consider the challenges of starting, continuing and enhancing a successful APES program.

Participants will complete a variety of field activities, including an array of useful techniques for analyzing plant and animal populations in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Methods will incorporate both traditional techniques and calculator-based labs.

This institute will incorporate significant lab activities and fieldwork. Participants should be prepared for light hiking over short distances.

What Participants Should Bring

Comfortable clothing is encouraged throughout the week. A refillable water bottle is a must. The instructor will provide insect repellent and sunscreen as needed, but participants might want to bring comfortable walking boots/shoes and hat for fieldwork. Participants should have one pair of shoes that they do not mind getting wet and/or muddy.
