The objective of this Pre AP® Spanish Language and Culture institute will be to assist participants to acquire and apply strategies to develop students’ language proficiency and cultural understanding within the Presentational Mode such as building vocabulary, scaffolding information and implementing a writing process to develop self-correction techniques.
In addition, participants will learn strategies in the Interpersonal Communication mode such as writing in formal and informal registers, stating and supporting opinions and negotiating through questioning. Also, participants will learn strategies to develop students’ proficiency in listening and reading instructions. It will consist of an overview of the new exam including and not limited to the 6 themes and essential learning skills for a successful AP® program.
This is an activity-based approach that will provide participants with useful strategies and activities for not only developing but maintaining a successful Pre-AP® program. Additional topics include applying the new rubrics, and integrating other important components such as literature, music, culture videos and online resources.
Please bring with you copies of your favorite activity, project, video, or ancillary materials to share with other participants on the last day. If you have a favorite and successful unit of study pertaining to the new format please bring 25 copies to share with classmates. Please bring lots of sticky notes and a couple of highlighters.
Alma L. González has been teaching in the public schools for over 30 years. Served as Department Head of the Foreign Language Department for 18 years. Has served as a Spanish AP® Reader for 9 years and has served as a Table Leader as well. She has experience in teaching Spanish Language AP® and Spanish Literature AP®. She has been an adjunct professor and University of Texas-Brownsville for 10 years and at Gladys Porter High School in Brownsville, TX. For 28 years. This will be her 10th year as a consultant for College Board.
