AP® Spanish Literature and Culture

Workshop Description

This literature course will focus on the themes for the Spanish Literature and Culture Curriculum (Las sociedades en contacto, La construcción del género, El tiempo y el espacio, Las relaciones interpersonales, La dualidad del ser y La creación literaria). Throughout the institute, participants will create units of study for the six themes which will be shared at the end of the institute. The institute will also address the components of the AP Spanish Literature and Culture exam (interpretative listening, reading analysis, text explanation, text and art comparison, analysis of a single text, and text comparison).


Participants will practice grading exam samples; they will also analyze and review published texts and digital materials for the course. Strategies and teaching methods for different types of students will be addressed. Throughout the week participants will share in creating strategies for preparing students for the test, incorporating culture and literature, finding and using authentic materials, integrating skills and using them in class and for the exam, and any other AP related matter that may be of interest.


Course Goals

  • To examine the format of all parts of the AP Spanish Literature and Culture exam and to practice strategies for student success on the exam.

  • To analyze the literary works on the reading list and make presentations to the class that can be shared by all.

  • To examine and analyze works of art and audio visual materials and recommend their appropriateness for the classroom.

  • To examine, analyze, and discuss a range of materials suitable for a high school AP Spanish Literature and Culture class

  • To prepare, share, and discuss successful classroom activities and strategies, new approaches and techniques for speaking, listening, reading, and writing for the six themes in the Advanced Placement Spanish Literature  and Culture class

  • To participate in a mock-grading session of the AP Spanish Literature and Culture exam.

Consultant Bio

Sandy Gutiérrez is a 4th generation Texan. She grew up in Houston and received her BA and MEd at the University of Houston. She started teaching at 21 and never stopped. She has been a teacher for 40 years at all levels from third grade through college. She taught the AP Spanish language course for 20 years and the AP Spanish literature course for 14 years, 10 of those years via television (distance learning) to students throughout Fairfax County, Virginia.


She received her Ph.D. in 2008 from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Sandy teaches at the university of Texas. Sandy has been an AP® consultant for over fifteen years. Sandy has led one-day workshops for the College Board® and has conducted summer institutes in both Spanish language and literature. She has been an AP® Spanish Reader for over ten years and reviews/scores syllabi for both the AP Spanish Language and Culture Course and the Spanish Literature and Culture Course.
