Background:
Stephen Ackley, joined UTSA's geology program in 2006, and has been receiving grants from the National Science Foundation since 1976 for the study of Antarctic sea ice.  An ice-covered spot near McMurdo is named "Ackley Point" in honor of his sea ice research in McMurdo Sound and elsewhere in Antarctica over the past 30 years.

His research grant funded the latest trip to the Antarctica where Dr. Hongjie Xie, and Ph.D. student Burcu Cicek studied polar sea ice flow.  Read about this "On the Ice", by Shelia Hotchkin in UTSA's Sombrilla on-line magazine, page 18.

Stephen Ackley is heading the next expedition for this fall.  Ackley is leading a 22 scientists team to Amundsen Sea, West Antarctic, which includes two Ph.D. students, one master's student and one undergraduate student from UTSA, and a high school teacher from Boerne High School.  You may read more about his project here: SIMBA Project.
