UTSA Master Plan
The master plan will provide direction for the continued physical and
educational development of UTSA in order to best serve students, faculty,
staff and city of San Antonio stakeholders. Planning will be driven by
academic priorities and support the goals of the university as its physical
development progresses. As part of the
Shared Vision: UTSA 2016, the
university is developing a broad plan to address the overall needs of the
1604, Downtown and Institute of Texan Culture campuses.
Scheduled to be completed in 2009, the plan will look at how UTSA uses its
land, the arrangement and scale of buildings, and the nature and function of
the landscape. It will set the context for physical changes on campus to
realize the university's research, teaching, residential, athletics and
recreational priorities. Upon its completion, the plan will have received
input from students, faculty, staff, alumni and nearby neighborhoods.

UTSA Downtown Celebrates 10 Years
On February 27th, UTSA held a
ceremony at the Downtown campus to recognize and celebrate its 10 year
anniversary. When it opened in 1997, the UTSA Downtown Campus served 900
students and offered 51 courses. The campus now has an enrollment of 6,400
students, offers approximately 500 courses and is home to the College of
Architecture and College of Public Policy. The Institute for Economic
Development, the Bank of America Child and Adolescent Policy Research
Institute and the Mexico Center, all reside at the Downtown campus.
The celebration was held in conjunction with Homecoming 2008 ceremonies, and
included presentations by president Ricardo Romo and Vice Provost
Jesse Zapata. The day continued with lecture by Henry Webber,
vice president for community and government affairs and senior lecturer in
the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago. It
concluded with the 4th annual Jazz in the Plaza, held in the Bill Miller
Plaza.

Fiesta UTSA held under the Sombrilla
A week of festivities commenced on April 18th as the university gathered to
celebrate Fiesta San Antonio Week. Fiesta UTSA features food and
activity booths sponsored by student organizations. This years theme
was "Olé". Items sold included beef fajitas, hamburgers, chicken
wings, ethnic foods and numerous kinds of drinks. President Ricardo Romo was the
Grand Marshall for the annual Fiesta Royalty Parade that goes through the
Sombrilla. Official Fiesta San Antonio events will continue
throughout the week of April 21st-27th and will be held all throughout the
greater San Antonio area.
New UTSA Student Sendoff in the
McAllen and Houston
Every year, thousands of new students descend upon UTSA as their college of
choice. Over the past few years, the university has helped celebrate
this important decision by hosting a New Student Sendoff, which allows new
students the opportunity to be recognized and honored by UTSA. The event
brings our newest students and their families together to meet others who will be
connected to UTSA. In an effort to connect all UTSA families in the area, the
UTSA Family Association invites current students and their families to be part of this
special event. Event details for the McAllen Sendoff are listed below:
When: May 16th, 2008
Time: 5:30-7:30 pm
Where: Koko's Uptown Cafe, 6100 N. 10th St., McAllen TX
Hor d'oeuvres and beverages will be served, as the event will have a mix and
mingle set up and atmosphere. A small portion of the event will be designed
to honor guests. There will also be time for speakers from different
university areas.
The Houston Student
Sendoff is scheduled for
August 8th, 2008,
however time and place are still to be determined.
We would be honored to have your entire family attend and be a
special guest of UTSA. If you are interested in attending either of these
events, please contact Julio J. Ramos at (210) 458-4724 or
julio.ramos2@utsa.edu.
In addition, if you would like to have a 5-10 minute speaking part, please
let me know. The speaking part can consist of a simple introduction, what
your student's experience at UTSA has been like, and what your experience as
a college parent has been like.
Financial Aid Roadrunner Guarantee

The Office of Enrollment Services and Financial Aid reminds
all students and family members that the Financial Aid Roadrunner Guarantee
deadline is fast approaching! The guarantee states that if a UTSA student
completes all paperwork associated with their personal financial aid file by
July 1, the office will guarantee that financial aid funds will arrive in
time to pay tuition and fees for the fall semester. July 1, 2008 is the date
of the "guarantee" for the 2008-2009 academic year. The July 1
deadline is not to be confused with the FAFSA priority deadline date which
was March 1. If students submit their documents after July 1, their
paperwork will still be processed, but their financial aid may be delayed
and they will probably have to make other arrangements to pay their tuition
and fees in order to prevent classes from dropping.
A reminder about the UTSA Family Listserv Board
UTSA Parents, dont forget about the
The Family Discussion Board! This
electronic mailing list, or listserv, allows subscribers to receive email
messages as they are posted to the board. Subscribers to the listserv
all contribute to the content of the message board. Have a question
about a UTSA service? Wondering where your student should go to get
help they need? Want to organize a meeting with other parents in the
area? Post any type of question to the listserv! As the
subscribers list continues to grow, the quality and camaraderie of our UTSA
parent interaction will be beneficial to those who choose to post and stay
active.
Users can choose to receive messages in real time, or they can choose to receive a
daily digest. The daily digest option will send one email to the
subscriber, which lists all topics posted that day. The user
can then view all messages in one email. Verification of
student enrollment is required and can be completed through the
UTSA Family website.
This step will insure that listserv members are associated with a UTSA
student.
