Hazlewood Exemption

The Hazlewood educational benefit is available to all Texas veterans who have served at least 181 days on active duty and have been given an honorable or general (under honorable circumstances) discharge. The veteran must have entered military services while a resident of Texas and must be a Texas resident when applying. The benefit will pay for tuition and fees (with the exception of the student services fee and property deposit) for up to 150 credit hours of either undergraduate or graduate work and can be used in conjunction with federal student aid (FAFSA).

Spouses or children of veterans who died as a result of service-related injury or illness, is missing in action or became totally (100%) disabled as the result of a service related injury or illness may also apply for this benefit

Eligible veterans may assign unused hours of their Hazlewood exemption to a child under certain conditions. This is known as the Hazlewood Legacy Program.

Hazlewood and Financial Aid

Hazlewood exemption can be used in conjunction with financial aid (grants, loans, scholarships and work-study). Please note that this exemption must fit within your Cost of Attendance (COA) and your financial need. If financial aid is already disbursed or awarded at the time your Hazlewood exemption is approved, there may be adjustments to your financial aid (grants, loans, scholarships and work-study) to accommodate this exemption.

Processing Times and Disbursement

We typically begin to review and certify Hazlewood 4 weeks prior to the start of the term and recommend that students submit Hazlewood documentation as soon as you are registered for the term. We strongly recommend that students who submit their Hazlewood documentation within 4 weeks of the start of term consider making payment arrangements for the tuition and fee deadline. Please note that if you decide to utilize the tuition and fee loan, the interest is not covered by the exemption. Once our office certifies eligibility, we notify Fiscal Services to apply the exemption to your tuition bill. Typically, this is applied a few days prior to tuition deadline. If you add a class after your Hazlewood exemption has paid, please note that Fiscal Services will automatically process the increase within 2 weeks. Note that Hazlewood is not retroactive to prior terms.
