Summer Financial Aid

Financial Aid is typically awarded for fall and spring. If a student wishes to be considered for summer financial aid, students must submit a Summer Application (available mid-January each year to fill out online on ASAP) and have a FAFSA on file for the applicable aid year in order to be awarded financial aid for the summer. Applying for Summer Aid

Students who are newly admitted and whose first semester will be summer, will automatically be awarded financial aid for the summer as long as a FAFSA is on file for the applicable aid year. Continuing students must submit a Summer Application for applicable aid year in order to be awarded summer financial aid. The application is available through ASAP and the priority deadline for submission is March 15. Typically, awarding for summer takes place in late April or early May.

Aid Available in the Summer

Federal Funds

Most federal funds (Pell, SEOG, Stafford Loans, Perkins, TEACH Grant) are awarded for fall and spring and not available during the summer semester. Students who did not use their full allocation of Pell, Stafford Loans or TEACH Grant may be awarded any leftover funds for the summer. Parent PLUS and Graduate PLUS loan are available for summer, however there must be a new credit approval and PLUS Application on file.

State Funds

State funds such as B-on-Time Loan and Texas Grant are not available for the summer.

Institutional Funds

There is very limited institutional funding (UTSA grant) that is typically available to students who fill out their Summer Application prior to the priority deadline of March 15.

Work-Study

Institutional work-study funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis for the summer.

Alternative Loans

Alternative loan funds and CAL are available for summer, but we urge students to use alternative or private loans as a method of last resort.

Undergraduate students must be enrolled a minimum of half-time in order to be eligible for summer aid. Summer budgets are based on half-time enrollment. Enrollment does not have to be in one term but can be spread out amongst the various summer terms. There are consequences for dropping or withdrawing for summer courses, so students with questions about how changing enrollment during summer will affect their aid should contact our office.

Satisfactory Academic Progress and Summer

Student must be making Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) at the end of the spring semester in order to be eligible for summer financial aid. For more information, please visit our SAP webpage.
