Background:
Stephen Ackley, joined UTSA's geology
program in 2006, and has been receiving grants from the National
Science Foundation since 1976 for the study of Antarctic sea ice.
An ice-covered spot near McMurdo is named "Ackley Point" in honor of
his sea ice research in McMurdo Sound and elsewhere in Antarctica
over the past 30 years.
His research grant funded the latest trip to the
Antarctica where Dr. Hongjie Xie, and Ph.D. student Burcu Cicek
studied polar sea ice flow. Read about this "On the Ice", by

Stephen Ackley is heading the next
expedition for this fall. Ackley is leading a 22 scientists
team to Amundsen Sea, West Antarctic, which includes two Ph.D.
students, one master's student and one undergraduate student from
UTSA, and a high school teacher from Boerne High School. You
