SCHOLARSHIPS - Department of Geological Sciences               


All scholarships awarded by the Department of Geological Sciences require that the recipient to:

  •   Be actively pursuing a degree in the Department of Geological Sciences
  •   Unless otherwise stated, be enrolled full-time: Fall/Spring, 12 hours for undergraduates and 9 hours for graduate students.
  •   Submit a completed application form and submit any supporting material as required.

AMY SHELTON AND V.H. MCNUTT ENDOWED PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Award: Up to $1,000.  Exceptional students may be awarded more. Renewable on a competitive basis.
Criteria: Recipient must be enrolled full-time (minimum of 12 hours for undergraduate students and minimum of 9 hours for graduate students) and pursing a degree in the Department of Geological Sciences.
Must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.00.
Recipients will be selected primarily on academic excellence, and need may also be considered as determined by the department scholarship committee.
Deadline: September 15th.       

MRS. PARVATHAMMAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Award:  Amounts vary.
Criteria: Recipient must be enrolled full-time as an undergraduate actively pursuing a degree in geology.
The award goes to a female student as long as females constitute a minority of the geology majors.
The scholarship will be given to the student with the best academic performance during the past year as determined by the department scholarship committee.
Deadline: March 1

SOUTHWEST GEM AND MINERAL SOCIETY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Award:  Amounts vary.
Criteria: Must be a geology major or graduate student who has applied to attend summer field camp, and has been accepted.
The scholarship is awarded based on academic excellence and needs as determined by the department scholarship committee.
Deadline: March 1

DR. JAMES O. JONES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Award:Amount vary.
Criteria: Must be actively pursuing a degree in geology. Applies and accepted to attend geological field-based instruction (e.g. summer field camp). Or, geological field based research.
The scholarship is awarded based on academic excellence, need and excellence of the proposal as determined by the department scholarship committee.
Deadline:  March 1 

 


THE FOLLOWING THREE (3) SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AWARDED BY THE SOUTH TEXAS GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY (STGS).  INQUIRE AT THE STGS http://www.stgs.org/, OR SEE DR. ERIC SWANSON FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

JONES-AMSBURY RESEARCH GRANT
Award:  Up to $1,000 to support student (undergraduate and graduate) research directly related to the geology of South Texas.
Deadline: Varies.  Awards are made by May 31.  Application is made to the STGS.

FIELD CAMP SCHOLARSHIP
Award:  Up to $1,500 for summer field camp expenses.
Deadline: March 31.  Application made to the STGS.

CHAIRMAN'S AWARD
Award: $500
The award goes to a "meritorious, needy or otherwise qualified student" as recommended to the chair by the departmental scholarship committee.  The recipient's name is submitted to the STGS before the end of April.
