SUBJECT: Delegation of Authority to Sign
The authorized signature for each budget account is the administrative department head, dean, or division director. In the case of contracts and grants the authorized signature is that of the principal investigator (unless the responsible division director or dean has indicated otherwise).
A Request for Authorization of Signature form must be submitted whenever it is necessary for someone other than the administrative head of an office or department (or the director of a project) to sign fiscal or other University papers. These forms are available in General Stores. Such requests should be kept to a minimum, and only in rare instances should other than the administrative head be authorized to sign appointment and other papers involving salary accounts. All requests include the statement that the responsibility for the funds remains with the initiator.
When the form is completed, the original and all other copies should be sent to the Vice President for Business Affairs for approval and distribution of copies as indicated on the form.
Signature delegations should be reviewed and updated at the beginning of each fiscal year.
