Chapter 2

Faculty and Academics

2.12 Policy on Student Evaluations of Teaching

  1. UTSA will use evaluations of faculty teaching performance as one element in the evaluation process.

  2. The I.D.E.A. Student Ratings of Instruction form for student evaluation of faculty teaching performance will be used in all classes of lecture-discussion format, as recommended by the University Faculty Senate.

  3. Completion of the student survey is voluntary in that students will not be required to complete the evaluation form. However, they will be asked to do so.

  4. All full-time faculty will have students evaluate their teaching in a minimum of two classes surveyed per academic year, excluding summer sessions. Those classes will be selected by the Department Chair in collaboration with the faculty member. The classes selected may be offered in one or both long terms.

  5. Evaluations will not be conducted before the tenth week of the fall and spring terms. These evaluations are coordinated through the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and administered by the Departments in accordance with current University procedures. Instructions for evaluation administrators will be provided by the Office of Institutional Effectiveness.

  6. Statistical summaries of evaluation data will be released by the Office of Institutional Effectiveness to the faculty members and to the Department Chairs for use of the Chairs, the Deans, the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the President and appropriate faculty advisory committees. The Office of Institutional Effectiveness will retain the original evaluation forms.
