2.18 Off-Campus Courses for Credit

This memorandum sets forth the University policy regarding off-campus courses for credit. It is the University's policy to meet the needs of the community as they fall within the mission and philosophy of the University and, to the extent possible, within budgetary restraints.

  1. Responsibility and authority for approving all off-campus courses shall rest with the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, who will coordinate all off-campus credit offerings and will be the liaison between UTSA, the Coordinating Board, and other universities regarding off-campus courses for credit.

  2. The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs may receive requests for courses to be taught off campus from varied sources. These may include requests for single courses, requests to meet course needs of other universities to be offered in San Antonio, requests to meet off-campus program needs, and others. When a request is made to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, he or she will inform the appropriate College Dean. The decision whether or not to respond to each request is made by the College in question, subject to the approval of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

  3. Academic authority for off-campus courses for credit shall be the same as the academic authority for credit courses on campus. Selection of faculty for off-campus courses shall be based on the same criteria as selection of faculty for courses offered on the campus. Admission requirements for off-campus courses will be the same as for courses taught on campus. Only courses listed in the catalog and in our inventory may be taught off campus.

  4. The Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs shall serve to coordinate the off-campus courses once they are approved. It shall be his or her responsibility to schedule the class in consultation with the Dean of the College, provide space for the class, and provide general assistance to the faculty. Student registration may be handled separately from regular registration by the Office of Admissions and Registrar.
