Summary

 

·  Function:   To provide advanced technical support and assistance in the performance of animal laboratory procedures.

 

· Scope:      Responsible for providing competence in the performance of technical duties for optimum animal care within the facility.

 

Duties

 

·  Typical:

1.      Provide daily husbandry of laboratory animals to include observation of animals, handling and restraint, feeding and watering, changing cages/racks, and sanitizing animal quarters and equipment in compliance with Federal regulations.

2.      Operates and/or uses supplies and equipment necessary to perform the husbandry duties.

3.      Provide daily record keeping for animals, inventories, and room environments.

4.      Train entry and mid-level technicians (senior technicians).

5.      Assist researchers and veterinary staff.

6.      Perform other duties as assigned.

 

·  Periodic:

1.      Conduct inventories.

2.      Sterilize instruments.

3.      Conducts sterility checks on autoclaves and assists in routine maintenance of equipment.

 

Education

 

Required

Preferred

High school graduation or GED

College level courses in biological sciences.

 

Other Requirements

 

Required

Preferred

Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science.

Experience

 

Required

Preferred

Two years of experience as an animal technician.

The two years of experience in the local unit.

 

Equipment

 

Required

Possible

Operation of cage and rack washers, tunnel-type cage washers, conventional and pass-through autoclaves and other allied equipment.

Personal computer and other standard office equipment.

 

Working Conditions

Possibility of animal bites or scratches.

Occasional weekend and holiday duties on a rotational basis.

Direct supervision by designated supervisory personnel.

Direct guidance of Animal Attendants and other assigned personnel.

 

Accuracy

 

Must be precise in calculations for formulas and dosages. Must perform duties with a high level of skill and accuracy.
