Summary

 

·  Function:   To provide supervisory and technical skills to assist in planning, organizing, and directing grounds care and maintenance.

 

·  Scope:      Responsible for assisting in the supervision of the maintenance and care of turf, trees, shrubberies, perennials, annual flowers and interior plants, and general maintenance of outdoor areas.

 

Duties

 

·  Typical:

1.      Assists in planning, organizing, overseeing, performing and assuring completion of maintenance of athletic fields, developed/undeveloped landscape areas, interior plants, greenhouses, outdoor fountains, parking lots, walkways and roadways.

2.      Assists in planning, organizing, overseeing, performing and assuring completion of maintenance, repair and installation of landscape irrigation systems.

3.      Assists with general supervisory duties to include maintaining direct report’s records, ensuring accurate submission of leave and attendance, monitoring job performance, and recommending disciplinary action.

4.      Assists in organizing, implementing and supervising new landscape and irrigation installation and related projects, to include monitoring and reviewing projects completed by outside contractors.

5.      Ensures support staff are trained in the proper care and use of all equipment, materials, tools and supplies.

6.      Assists with equipment monitoring and materials inventory; determining needs, requisitioning and distributing equipment, tools and materials.

7.      Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

 

Required

Preferred

High School diploma or GED.

Additional formal coursework in horticultural, landscape irrigation or related field.

 

Other Requirements

Valid Texas Driver’s License.

Texas Department of Agriculture Non-Commercial Applicator’s License.

Criminal Background Check (CBC) and motor vehicle check.

Texas Structural Non-Commercial Pest Control Applicator License.

 

Experience

 

Required

Preferred

Five years of experience in grounds care and maintenance.

Six or more years of experience in grounds care and maintenance including one year in a supervisory capacity.

 

Equipment

 

Required

Possible

Knowledge of the operations, maintenance and minor repair of typical landscaping equipment, such as tractors, cultivators, edgers, and power lawn mowers.

Asphalt tamper, cement saw.

Personal computer and standard office equipment.

 

Working Conditions

Extended periods of time standing, walking, pushing bending and kneeling.

Potential contact with poison ivy and stinging insects, such as ants, bees and wasps.

Working outdoors with exposure to seasonal weather conditions.

Occasionally requires working at elevated heights.

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds with or without accommodation.

Periodically required to work weekends, holidays and other non-standard hours.

Exposure to hazardous mechanical equipment.

Travel between UTSA campus components.
