Trademarks and Licensing

Background

As a component of The University of Texas System (UT System), The University of Texas at San Antonio has achieved a reputation as an outstanding institution of higher education. Reputation is specific to the name of UTSA. Reputation is also represented by the seal, trademarks, logos and service marks used by the UT System and its component institutions (UT Trademarks).

Royalty income generated from the licensees that have used UTSA's trademarks is dedicated to scholarships. Consequently, the purchase of products licensed by the UT System provides funds that enable persons with financial need to attend a university. Conversely, the sale of a product with an unlicensed UTSA trademark is an infringement of the UT System’s valuable trademark rights and diminishes the ability to provide scholarships for students.

Trademark Protection

The use of a UTSA trademark in conjunction with the product or service of an individual, group or corporation may damage the university's hard-earned reputation. For this reason, UT System has taken the action necessary to protect UTSA trademarks under applicable federal and state law and has developed policies and procedures to license their use under limited circumstances (Trademark Policy).

The UTSA Business and Technology Development Manager serves as the clearinghouse for both the UTSA campus community interested in purchasing or creating logo-bearing items, and companies interested in manufacturing and selling UTSA logo-bearing products.
