Images and Graphics

"ALT" Parameter

Any image that is used on a page, whether it be a photo or graphic, must have an alternative text description in order to comply with state and federal compliance issues. The text should be brief and contain more than simple descriptions like image, photo or imageFileName.jpg.

Formats

UTSA endorses the use of the following image formats:

  • JPG - Use for photographic images
  • GIF - Use for graphic elements (i.e., buttons, logos)

Guidelines

  • 72 dpi maximum
  • Avoid use of HTML or Javascript to size and crop images
  • Images should not be enlarged, as pixelation will occur
  • Use ALT parameter (ie <img src="foo.jpg" alt="Characters in a foo"/>)

Image maps

Do not use image maps for primary navigation elements. If an image map is necessary, provide a separate list of text-only links.
