Who can use the wireless network?
All UTSA students, faculty and staff are permitted to use the campus wireless network.

What can I use on the wireless network?
All web traffic (HTTP, HTTPS, etc.) is allowed on the wireless network.

How secure is the wireless network?
Traffic on the wireless network is not encrypted and can therefore be "sniffed" during transmission.  Encryption of sensitive information will rely upon encryption methods implemented on the remote server such as SSL.  Faculty and staff members needing access to sensitive resources via the UTSA administrative network will need to install and use the VPN client.

What is a "Wireless Hotspot"?
Hot spots are areas where individuals can access the university's network if their laptops have appropriate wireless network capabilities. In these areas, authorized computer users can log on to a public segment of the network, and access online applications.

How can I improve my wireless connection?
The wireless signal can be affected by many different factors including terrain, weather, obstacles in the path of the signal and proximity to other wireless users.  Usually the best way to improve your signal is to try moving to another area.

Do I need to logoff the network?
No. You will be logged off automatically on a daily basis.

What is needed to access the wireless network?
To ensure connectivity you should purchase a card that is 802.11b or 802.11g (Wi-Fi) compliant.  No configuration changes are necessary once your wireless card is installed and functioning correctly.

Two levels of guest access are available to visitors to the university:

  • Level 1: Access is for guest users who are not current students or faculty/staff members.  Level 1 users will be able to access UTSA Web sites only.
  • Level 2: Access is available for guest users who are sponsored by a college or department on campus. These guest accounts have a wider level of access.  Level 2 account request forms can be downloaded or are available via public folders for Faculty & Staff access in MS ®Outlook.
