International Programs

Supporting Documentation Information

We will accept copies of your financial documents; however we will not accept copies sent by fax. At your visa interview you must provide the official financial documents to the US Embassy or Consulate Officer.

  1. Bank statements and bank letters should be dated within the last 6 months and must have the account holders name and the final balance in the account.
  1. Scholarship/Award letters from UTSA must be from the department and list the student’s name, state the award amount, and dates of award.
  1. All documentation must be in English. If your bank cannot write your letter or issue your statement in English, you must have the document(s) translated by an official licensed translator. The translation must be on company letterhead with the stamp/seal and signature of the translator.
  1. Multiple Sponsors: You are permitted to have more than one sponsor. Please have each sponsor complete a CFR form and attach their financial documentation. The combined total from all of your sponsors must meet the total amount we are requesting.
  1. All supporting financial documentation must be accompanied by the completed Confirmation of Financial Resources form.

The following items will NOT be accepted as financial documentation:

  1. W-2 forms
  2. Personal letter regarding your finances
  3. Salary slips / Pay Stubs
  4. Ownership of Property
  5. Income Tax Documents

Dependants: Bringing your spouse and/or children with you

As an F-1/J-1 student you are entitled to bring dependants with you who can apply for the F-2/J-2 visa. Dependants are considered to be your spouse (legal husband or wife) and children less than 21 years of age. You are required to show additional financial support for your dependants.

SPOUSE:
You must provide an additional $5,000 of financial support for your spouse. You must also submit the following supporting documentation before an I-20 form can be issued for your spouse:

  1. Application to request Dependent I-20/DS-2019
  2. Form for F-1 Dependent (F-2)
    Form for J-1 Dependent (J-2)

  3. Copy of your spouses Passport name page

CHILDREN (under 21 only)
You must also show additional finances if you will be seeking an F-2/J-2 visa for your dependant child(ren). You must provide an additional $3,000 for each child. You must also submit the following supporting documentation for each child before an I-20/DS-2019 can be issued for your child(ren):

  1. Application to request Dependent I-20/DS-2019
  2. Form for F-1 Dependent (F-2)
    Form for J-1 Dependent (J-2)

  3. Copy of Passport name page

Undergraduate (Bachelor's Degree) Students

Athletic Scholarships:
If you are receiving an athletic scholarship, please request that a copy of your scholarship letter be forwarded to our office for use as your financial documentation. In cases such as this, you do not need to submit a CFR form to go with the departmental award letter.

If your award is less than our requested financial guarantee amount you must submit additional financial documentation to make up the difference. For example, if you must show a financial guarantee in the amount of $18,000 and your department awards you $15,000, you must provide a CFR form with financial documentation for the $3,000.

Border County Applicants (for students from Mexico only)
In order to apply for Border County you must first qualify for the F-1 visa. Therefore, you must submit the Confirmation of Financial Resources estimated amounts.

Graduate (Master's and Doctorate) Students

Departmental Stipend:
If you will receive funding from your department, please request that a copy of your award letter be forwarded to our office for use as your financial documentation. In cases such as this, you do not need to submit a CFR form to go with the departmental award letter.

If your award is less than our requested financial guarantee amount you must submit additional financial documentation to make up the difference. For example, if you must show a financial guarantee in the amount of $18,000 and your department awards you $15,000, you must provide a CFR form with financial documentation for the $3,000.
