HEALTH INSURANCE WAIVERSHealth Insurance Waiver Information and ApplicationThe University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) is a component university of the UT System of Higher Education in the State of Texas . The rules and regulations of the UT System Board of Regents require that international students holding nonimmigrant visas and living in the United States are required to maintain approved comprehensive health insurance coverage while enrolled at institutions of The University of Texas System. Each institution of the UT System is authorized to assess each international student a health insurance fee in the amount of the premium approved for the UT System Health Insurance Plan provided there is no evidence of continuing coverage under the UT System Employee Health Plan or a comparable mandatory employee plan, or continuing mandatory coverage through a government sponsored health plan (which covers health care in the United States and complies with the federal Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1987). If the UTSA international student has a pre-existing (prior to the student’s first-term of enrollment at UTSA), comparable, and comprehensive employee or government sponsored health insurance plan that meets the necessary requirements, the student may complete and sign this request form and return it along with the required proof of insurance forms to the reception desk at the Office of International Programs for processing. The international student completing the request will be notified by letter of approval or non-approval of the waiver request. The letter will be sent to the “Current Address” provided by the student on the completed request form. All UTSA international student insurance waiver requests will be processed and then reviewed by the Director or Assistant Director of the Office of International Programs. A final decision will be made on whether or not the proposed health insurance coverage is comprehensive and meets the requirements of a comparable plan. If the insurance policy is deemed comprehensive, but does not provide coverage for the costs of both medical evacuation and repatriation of remains, the requester will be required to purchase supplemental insurance for each of these potential circumstances in the coverage amounts of $25,000, respectfully. If the request for a waiver is approved, it is the responsibility of the international student making the request to ensure the substituted insurance stays in effect for the duration of the academic period. If the insurance is based on employment and the employment is terminated, the waiver requester must immediately inform the Office of International Programs and enroll in the UT System Health Insurance Plan. If the request for a waiver is disapproved, the automatic fee assessment for the UT System Health Insurance Plan will remain on your university student account, will continue to provide you with health insurance coverage, and must be paid in full, along with your other education costs.
